I've owned both a 24valve CTD and my current pickup magnum v10. The V-10 is fairly comparable power wise to the 24 valve except for at the very low end. Fuel milage is way different. My current pickup is a single cab long bed 4x4 Magnum v-10 with slight mods, 33 12.5 tires. It has plenty of power for anything i've done with it including pulling 12,000+ lbs. One great thing i have to say about the v-10 is that it doesn't seem to matter what you're doing the fuel milage doesn't seem to change. Running empty down the highway it actually seems to get better above 70 mph until you hit about 90 then it drops back off. The V-10 seems to be a great choice to pull with without spending the money on the CTD

Hey guys,
Sorry for a newbie question, but can anyone comment on the Cummins diesel "dreaded 53 block" problem. I am currently looking at a 99 CTDwith 80k. What should I look for to tell if this truck has this series block. VIN #?
Thanks, Johnny

You'l get probably double the mpg with the Cummins. The 12v Cummins is one of the most reliable diesels ever made, and with some simple inexpensive upgrades you can be making huge power. If your towing diesels are the only way to go.
+1 that pretty much sum's up my .02 on this topic as well.
Not necessarily. My grandpa owned 3 2nd gen v10's. He said going into colorado there was a consistant 7% grade over 13 miles and, while pulling a 5th wheel, he pulled right past 5 diesels that were also pulling 5th wheels and struggling. 2 of them were cummins. The v10 is an extremely capable towing engine and the diesel shouldn't automatically be viewed as a better towing engine.

To add to the original question. Both my grandparents worked at the engine plant in kenosha. While they were looking for a new truck to tow their 5th wheels (they had 2), they talked to a guy who had recently been transferred to the plant. He had previously worked in Detroit and was involved in the development of the v10 and the 5.9 diesel. He recommended the v10 over the diesel.
