does that liquid coolant seal stuff work? ya know the bottle with the flakes of copper and zinc and what not?
I would not advise it. It is just masking a real problem. If you plan on keeping it long term you should fix it right. Just my .02
+1... if the stuff even works

You need to figure out what's actually leaking before you go through the repair motions. Water pumps and timing cover gaskets are fairly common on SB Mopars, especially at your mileage.

Would a timing cover gasket cause a coolant leak?

There's also a short bypass hose right near the t-stat that's like6 inches long and goes from theintake manifoldto the water pump. It's made of rubber just like the radiator hose, but unlike thet-stathousing, there aren't any metal fittings there. At 72K when I replaced my plenum gasket I had to cut it off as it was melted to the intake manifold. At 300K it might very well have melted or rotted thru.

Look at the sixth picture of this post to see the bypass hose (it's the large short hose on the right held on by spring clamps):

It might not be a bad idea to replace all the radiator hoses at 300K. Damn, that's a lot of miles for a gasser! Gives me hope for my engine!

my resevoir doesnt hold coolant but my radiator does, though it did run shallow on one particular road trip. unknown if that was a fluke or what, my engine doesnt run hot or anything. figured it was something minor that could be dealt with easily ahead of time, but it hasn't happened since.

Thanks for in input. I seem to think its the T stat housing since I noticed some puddling on top of the right front portion of the valve cover bolts. I HOPE! I will be removing at least the alternator tomorrow to take a peek.

P.S. nice write up!

Oh, that's not my write up, it's Steve's. Be sure to pass along the compliment to him.

In case anyone wondered, I changed out my thermostat to a 180F one, replaced my radiator hoses, filled it up with coolant. Start it up it was still pouring out coolant. Turns out it was only a loose worm gear clamp on the coolant line that goes to the heater core. Oh well, I guess it needed the PM anyways. And now my 15 year old will have an idea of how to do it when he has to do it himself.
