CAT and TPS
I have a 99 RAM 1500 4x4 and I'm pretty sure it's the 5.9 (how can one tell 4 sure 5.2 or 5.9?)
I know I have a plenum issue and plan on replacing that next month.
About 2 weeks ago, if I was cruising at 60 and wanted to pass- accel. felt weird... like hitting the gas wasn't feeding more gas and things felt "muffled".
This only happened at higher speeds when I floored it... as of last nite, it idled fine, took 1st into 2300rpm (higher than usual) then was real slow at accel and took 30 seconds to hit 35... all with that "muffled" feel. I read about the CAT and tps on the forum- replaced tps and it was no better- so... I popped a hole in the cat (instead of pulling the o2) to release a bit o' pressure and this improved the 0-35 real well (not back to normal) so I figured maybe a little more relief would help- NOT so... now 20mph is a chore.
Do you think just replacing the CAT now will get me back to my normal performance, except for my usual plenum issue?
Should be something easily replaced by myself, no? Can it be clamped in- or does it HAVE to be welded?
As always- all your help is much appreciated.

for engine size, check your VIN number, over about 6th position or so. Y=5.2 Z=5.9
when you say you opened it up more, you mean you cut a bigger hole in the cat ?
when you did, was your your result better, worse, or same as with small hole ?
cutting a hole in from the outside may not do any/much good. there is a honeycomb material in there, and if the blockage is sort of all over, you may not have hit the jackpot spot.
a low budget way to fix a blocked cat is to cut it off with a saws-all. punch it out with a rod or broom handle and knock all the stuffing out, then weld it back in.
its ok to clamp in a new one if your pipe fits are correct. you may need some short pieces of pipe to get your lengths and overlap flanges right. all that should be avail at auto parts store.

I had put a 2nd hole in it- closer to where the cat intake is.
Autozne has the cat for $140... I figure my sawzall, a short piece o' pipe and the assoc. clamps and connectors should do the job. But it sucks to do it in the cold with the rain coming down
