Default NV241 in place of NV231D Transfer Case

I've been browsing around here trying to find out if anyone has posted on this yet, and I get a lot of threads about motor/trans swaps instead[sm=huh.gif]
So here's my story. I purchased a 98 1500 4X4 knowing it had trouble engaging into 4WD. I had studied out before and figured that it was most likely the CAD unit. So I bought the truck and replaced the CAD with a posi-lok. While I was in there, I checked out the axles and applicable gears and they all looked to be in great shape.
Well, I put it back together and the truck still doesn't engage. It seems like it goes in, but when there is actual torque applied, the front end just grinds and pops like crazy. I've heard that the chain can slip in the t-case, but from the feel of it, it is far beyond just a slipping chain.

Now I'm not saying it is the t-case, but the other hard components check out. Now to the main point: There is a guy selling a newly rebuilt (1000mi) NV241 from his 98 5.9 AT in the local classifieds. If it does come down to needing a t-case, would it be possible to use this t-case? What all would have to be done to get it to work? Any and all help appreciated. Ya'll rock!

Oh...and also, should I just bit the bullet and trust myself to take it apart and see if I can find out what's wrong? I'd consider myself an average to above average garage mechanic, but definitely no expert. I've never been inside a transmission or t-case, but I've been inside about everything else truck or motorcycle.

well even if you just take of the cover and look at it and shift it in and out of 4x4 to see whats not grabbing or what might be broken

...."The NV241 is essentially a NV231HD with six gears in the planetary set. "...

i think this site will answer your questions http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/tranfer_case.htm

Thanks ryans590. I actually found that site in my search, but my concern is actually more between the manual transmission and the automatic transmission. The service tech at the dealership said that although it is the same part, they could have a different spline/yoke (I believe were the terms he used) that accepts the trans.

Searched, but it seems the t-case is never discussed in enough detail to get what I need...So I will continue to ask I guess. A couple things I question:

1) how easy would it be for myself to swap out the input shafts? I don't see any reason why it would be difficult, but if someone has actually been inside, some info would be nice.
2) the 231 is almost 3" shorter than the 241, is this going to pose a problem? Especially considering I'm sitting 3" higher already, what kind is this going to pose a problem with the driveshaft?

1) well ive never been in one myself so i cant say for sure...
2) the fact the one you are wanting to put iin is longer should help especially with a lift, should be able to slid it in a little further to make up for it, and its anways easer to shorten them then try to exrend them

Before you go replacing the whole case, i would check the snap ring on the output shaft, that will cause it to grind.

Both have the 23 spline input, it will work.
