Looking for used dodge 4WD
Ok. Here is the thing. I really would like to trade in my neon for a dodge pickup. I am looking into 99-00 years with minimul mileage, I would also like a 4x4. Shortbed if possible to be able to squeez into the garage and extended cab. So here is the question, is there anything that went wrong with this year? Engine wise? For example: the 99 cummins 24 valve 5 speed had issues with the fuel pump going out and lift pump. I do not want to get into something that I am going to have problems with. The 99 cummins automatic didnt have any issues with the lift pump as for as I know. Give me your opinion on what I should look into or PM me. I am all ears. [X(] I am kinda lame when it comes to this.
Let's see. Fuel is over 2 bucks a gallon. Trucks suck fuel. Neons are gas mizers and fun to drive.
Winner,,,,,, Neon.

If I had to pick a truck, I'd get one with a 318/360, 5-spd, 2WD, limited slip, towing package, extended cab, shortbed.

Gotta have the 4x4 for the snow belt. Stay away from ANY truck with an automatic. If you get a '99-newer Cummins you're gonna be paying thru the *** for it. A '99 extended cab shortbox 4x4 with a Cummins blue books for $19k. Plus it gets less than half the mileage of your neon.
I'd go with a slightly older truck for less money, get a regular cab 1/2 ton with a gas motor. They're a lot cheaper, and all you'll need unless you're pulling a major trailer. With a cheaper truck, you could probably keep the neon and use that for commuting. That's my method with my vehicles. I've got the '97 Ram for pulling the trailer and hauling stuff, and the '95 Monte Carlo for commuting. My payments on both vehicles were less than what most of my friends were paying for one newer truck. Insurance sucks though. And it's due next week...
Just a couple ideas for you to ponder.

No No No. I dont want a Cummins. I just used that as an example as to what to stay away from because they had problems w/the lift pump in 99. What I am saying is yes, I am looking into a dodge, gas, 4x4 shortbed extended cab. Actaully similiar to yours Snafu. What my question is: Is there any specific model like from 98-01 that had certain issues? Like with the motor or brakes or fuel pump?, etc. Then, I can know right away if I look at that specif truck I can ask if they have ever encountered that issue or if they have if they repaired it. I know this sounds like alot but hey, you are men, and well....I am a women and I know that people WILL try to "trick" me. I guess I would like to use you guys knowledge for my benefit.
Unless someone volunteers to come with me. hehe. Thanks again guys.
MT: Neon is ok but....I need something bigger, something to run over peopel with if they make me mad. gurrr!!! [:@] I also need 4wd. I need something safer.

Ok, I read it right the first time and then went off on a tangent on my reply.
All automatics SUCKED, stay away from them. Closely check ball joints, tie rod ends, and steering box. Get the seller to replace them if there is any play at all in any of them. Fuel pumps were kinda an issue for a while, but don't remember exactly. Axle bearings are a common failure, esp on 1/2 tons. Intake plenum gaskets commonly go also. A 3/4 ton will be more reliable in the long run due to the heavier drivetrain, but you'll pay more for it and they ride rough as hell.

all auto's don't suck... mine is fine. But when it does need attention APS Precision will get a call for one of their bullet proof trannys. As mentione earlier, the plenum is an issue, also not menitoned is the Tracbar... they suck. Solid Steel Industries makes a bracket that uses the 2003 tracbar which is a better fix for the crappy designed bar that's on there now. I replaced my bar back in June and it's already bad again. time to upgrade

I would have to dissagree with this about automatics. I had 120,000 miles on my truck when the trany gave me the first problem. We were on a long road trip pulling the car trailer and T/A. I made it home but the only gears I had was drive and reverse. It went out with 300 miles to go to get home and it sucked to start form a dead stop. No downshifting, just drive to do it all. I totally believe it was my fault because I noticed the cooler line was leaking some so on that trip I kept topping it off with Dextron III as it was all I could find at gas stations. When we got home the Dodge dealer rebuilt it and I now have 142,00 miles on the truck and it's still going strong.
