Looks like tooling marks. I would not worry. The metal flake - Most of the time it looks like more than there really is. Just be glad its not chunks.

Could it be vise or channel lock marks from maintenance or manufacturing? Since you didn't find any large pieces of metal in the fluid I would say your good to go.

thanks for all the info guys. By the way the diff moves i figured it was either from a prior failure that had been fixed/reused or that it was done sometime when the diff was out. I've had no issues with the rear but i just needed some piece of mind.
