Default Buying a V10 2500 - Need some info

After a month or so of researching, I have decided to buy an older Ram 2500 V10 4x2. I have found a 96 and 99 model that are both in very good shape and very low mileage. I plan to use my truck to pull a 7100lb travel trailer. I have been told that the trannies go out easily in these and to make sure it's a 47RE or something. First, how do I know what tranny is in them? Where do I look? I definitely don't mind crawling underneath to find out. Also, where do I check to find out what gear ratio is in the rear diff? I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and love my Dodges so buying an older one doesn't bother me. Thanks for any info.

all V10's had a 47...94-97 has 47RH, 98-01 has 47RE (H=Hydraulic controlled, E = Electronic controlled shift ) http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/4xre.htm

yo check gear ratio look in the glove box there should be a sticker in there that says what it was factory equiped with

if it was for towing id personally look for a 5 speed

I agree 100% with the 5 speed deal but I have not been able to find a stick anywhere around here unless you get the SRT V10 and that's way out of my price range. There are very few V10 extended cabs (qc or cc) withing 200 miles of here according to autotrader.

If I was made of money, I would have bought my buddies fathers 97 2500 dodge ram pickup. it was a v10 manual with a standard cab, long bed 4x4. It was painted black.. oh is that thing sweet! It's got a lift, tires, etc. everything is pretty much done that I would have done, so it would have been perfect. Too bad he wanted more than it was worth (over double). So I settled for my 01 1500 and working my way up.

to be honest with you they both suck lol....i really don't think one is superior over the other, they are both basically the same thing...the 47RE is really just a 47RH with a supple solenoids ans sensors added onto it if it comes dowh to that go with whitch ever is cheper
