How often is it Okay to turn your OD off?
I was just wondering. I know when I go up steep hills I put my foot into it and the RPM's go up to about 2500-2800 to maintain a good speed, but if I turn OD off during the uphill, it comes out of OD and the RPM's only get to around 2100 or so. I was wondering if it is okay to do that when going up hills and if it is better or worse for the engine? I just did it the other day, so I don't do it all of the time, but I would liketo know if it would be better for fuel consumption and such.Thanks.
im on 37's, I leave overdrive OFF when I know ill be doing a lot of stop and go driving around city, turn it on when I get on the freeway. Havent had any problems.

just driving around town or country side leave OD off , lost of MPG mite be .5 , no harm leaving OD OFF

i turn mine off every time i start it up. when i drive at 45-55, i leave it off, generally turning around 1800-2000 rpm with 33" tires. only when i'm on a good road where i can hold 55 or better do i turn it back on. i think mileage is actually better doing this, around 13-14 with all city stop/go, and up to 16 with some slow hwy mixed in (55 w/OD off).
for me, the secret is to keep the rpm's up around 1800-2000. that where the truck has some power and get up and go. anything less is lugging real bad, no power but still sucking gas.
