Front axle u-joint help
Ive never changed a front axle U joint before, but a recent vehicle inspection pointed out that the one on my 96 V10 needs to be replaced. Any info on how to do this on the net anywhere?
Any special tools aside from the common house tools needed to do this?
Otherwise Im gonna pay about $230 bucks to have it done. I have the U-Joing a 9 dollar part, hate to spend that much on labor if I can do it myself.

I am sure it can't be too much different, but the basic steps that are required to remove a front axle shaft on my 2001 2500 are:
1. Remove brake caliper and pads
2. Remove ABS wheel speed sensor
3. Remove the cotter pin and axle hub nut that hold the axle shaft.
4. Remove the four hub bearing bolts in the back of the spindle and remove the hub bearing.
5. Remove the brake dust sheild, and finally pull the axle shaft out being careful not to damage the oil seals.
Then, if you have a tool or vice that you can press out the u-joint, do it yourself, or take it to a local shop and they will press it for you for a couple of dollars.
I think it is mostly standard tools and if you have wrenched on vehicles before it isn't too hard. Save the two hundred bucks and invest 50 dollars into a factory service manual. You can find them on e-bay and they give step by step instructions on all procedures.
hope this helps
