Default Overhead Console Install

Anyone ever tried mounting an overhead console in a Ram that didn't originally come stock with one (i'm talking about the one without the readout display). I'm not really interested in wiring it in, just mounting it so I can use the little storage bin and sunglass/garage door holder. The dealer told me that you can't mount one in a pickup that did not come with it stock because there is nothing to mount it too. He said there is an actual mointing plate underneath the headliner that is welded directly to the underside of the roof. This is what the overhead console mounts to. If the pickup didn't come stock with the console, it doesn't have that mounting plate, it only has a peice of thick cardboard inside the headliner. I'm not sure if that would be able to support the weight of the console.

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried it anyway, and if so, what were the results.

Thanks.
