Hello, I have a 360 I bought a while back to replace mine (400,000+).Compression checked out good and I wood like to pull one of the main caps off to check bearing wear.My question,is which one will wear the most or do they pretty much the same?
If you're going to go through the trouble of pulling the pan why not look at them all? I would check rod bearings as well while your in there. Connecting rod bearing are more prone to failure than mains in my experience.
I have it on a stand so it shouldn't be to much trouble. It's supposed to be 150k on it and it has no sludge, very clean oil pan and pick up,also under VC clean. It had no dist. or TB on it when I got it.
With that kind of mileage I would also be tempted to pull the intake and replace the plenum gasket.
It's much much easier to change on the stand then when installed in the truck.
Did you ever hear this engine run?
That's pretty high miles to be taking a chance on.
I would do an engine reseal. Not bearings or rings, just take off the heads and oil pan to replace all the seals such as the head gaskets, mains, plenum, etc. Lot easier to do it while it is out of the truck than while it is in. Cheap piece of mind.
The golden rule is when you pull the pan, Replace all the bearings, if the top end takes a crap its not to bad, if the bottom end hand grenades then you have problems. When i do rods and mains i check them with plasti gauge to make sure i have the correct bearings, Parts people screw up sometimes. A motor to tight or too loose is a very bad thing that will cause premature wear
