Tailgate up creates a bubble that the air comming off the cab slides over. Tailgate off will not really matter. The worst is the nets as they cause wind turbulence/resistance. A bed lid or tonneau cover should be the best of all, unless you put an air dam/wing on the back, then it will go down. Also, figure your mileage from the pump, not the computer over 5 full tanks to be fair. Winter blend gas always gives you lower mileage.

I know mythbusters did this but Ford did it first, a couple of years ago in a wind tunnel.

so how do you find out the rolling resistance of a tire? I have shopped for tires and never saw a rating or a figure associated with RR.
But you are right... that does have a big factor. I want to go to the stock sized tire of 245/75/16 but I am sure I am not going to like the look fo the big truck with skinny "10-speed" looking tires. but a larger tire of a different design could offer the same, but there is also wind resistance also.

1. You meant to use the word seen right. Youreally should have used the pasttense form of the word "saw".

2. Don't start a sentence with a conjunction (Haven't you seen conjunction junction).

3. After every conjunction you need a comma.

4. I'm sure that you just fat fingered the "of".

5. You did it again you started a sentence with a conjuction.

6. That last one dosen't make sense at all.

For youroverall gradeyou get aC-.

There isn't a nice vehicle on this planet that gets good gas mileage.

Trucks don't get good mileage
Vipers don't get good mileage
Corvettes don't get good mileage
Camaros don't get good mileage
Ferrarris don't get good mileage
Cadillacs don't get good mileage
NICE SUVs don't get good mileage (i'm talking about durangos and excursions here, not the ****ty honda whatevers)

You know what gets good mileage?
Cavaliers
Volkswagons
Hondas
Toyotas
Neons
mini coopers

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I have lurked for months, and have found some very good information. But I have a 1996 ram with the 5.2L and I see right around 15 to 16mpg. I love the truck. But my weekend toy is a 1996 corvette 6speed. It pulls 28mpg on the highway at 70mph, and my best time in the 1/4 mile is 13.0 at 110mph. Some nice things really do get good mpg. Sorry I just wanted to point that out.
