engine additives??
i was wondering this becasue my engine oil is very dirty like black black and i just changed the oil 1000 miles ago, is it ok too run the additives in your engine that cleans it and then change the oil right after like you should, it says too run the stuff in your engine for 10-15 minutes at idle, and the turn engine off and get that oil out and put in new. and this goes for any additive. thanks and anybody reccomend one they used and worked
Your talking about engine flush ??? sure use it , most of the time i let it run 1/2 hour before changing . and do not drive with that stuff in the motor . what oil are you using ??
Just because your oil is black, does not mean it is losing its viscosity, especially after only 100miles. It looks black because it is suspending particulates, which is what it is supposed to do. Do you drive in a dusty environment? Are you blowing blue smoke? Are your plugs also black? And...gulp...is there oil in your plenum?
How many miles on your motor? If it's alot, I'd use caution doing an oil system flush as you may disloge alot of crap and clog up your delivery system. On a higher mileage engine I would remove the oil pan, pump screen, etc. before starting a flushing program. On the other hand, if your mileage is lower, go ahead and do it; regularly.
Here's what I do EVERY oil change.
Before draining, check oil level with the dipstick and add the appropriate amount of Mineral Spirits (cheaper than the pre-canned flushes and solvent is solvent) to the crankcase, i.e. 1 pint; 1 quart; to bring the level up. If the oil is full, drain off a quart and then procede, although that has never been a problem for me. Then run the engine (idle only) for 5-15 minutes. Shut it down and drain the oil like normal and go have a sandwich or do some other maintenance. Let it drain a good long time...1/2 hour or so. You don't want to leave any solvent inside. Replace a QUALITY filter and switch to synthetic oil of you choosing. Then stay with synthetic. Do this regularly and the engine (and oil) stays clean like oil should look. Although as mentioned, dirty oil is NOT a bad sign. However a top notch (usually more expensive) filter is key!
That's what works for me.
