i have a '98 with about 94K mi on it, has always taken great care of me but a couple months ago i started getting an 'O/D' off light after driving for 30 or 40 mi; then after that happened a few times, I got a "trans temp" light at the end of a 60 mile trip. Noticed that small stain in the driveway had grown to a large stain. Brought it to the shop and they checked the pan for parts and didn't find anything but said to bring it to a tranny shop, who did a bunch of tests and told me that the lockout was not disengaging and i could live with it for short trips or i'd need a rebuild for about $2000. i've never towed but driven hard up and down some hills. what's up with that?

 

I had the same problem!!!! OD automatically turns off without pressing button, trans temp light comes on. I took it to the dealership (the tranny was replaced at 72000, and i was on 103,000 and the warranty was good for 36,000...just made it). The guy at the dealership saifd that THE CONVERTER was not locking up. All i needed was a new torque converter and solenoid. The bill was 450, but it was under warranty so i didn't pay a dime.

Take it to another place and see what they say...try a dealership. Tell them whats wrong and tell them you think its the converter not locking up. Then they will not rip you.

 

I just posted a question kind of like this yesterday. The only difference was when I put mine in gear, reverse, or drive, my 98 would shut off. I played with the o/d button and everything was fine. I haven't had the o/d light or trans temp light come on yet.
