I took it for a test drive. It pulls pretty hard at all speeds. But once, i was doing about 65 and hammered the gas and the truck kind of stuttered or jolted a couple times when it was down shifting. I let off the gas and it stopped and it never did it again. I don't know if thats a problem or what.

Also, there were no engine leaks, all the linkage was in good order. The rear diff had some seapage around the gasket as well as the trans pan and transfer case. Pan and diff seem like an easy fix, t-case wasnt leaking all that bad.

Cosmetically it's got some dings and dents, but nothing major. The side mirrors would shake to hell once youy get on the road, how much do those run?
The exhaust tip was crimmped and it needs new shocks.

I guess my biggest concern would be if that tranny thing is a problem.

The guy quoted me 6400 otd. No warranty as is.
KBB for this truck is 7100 in fair condition.

Stuttered or jolted downshifting? Leaking into the T-pan? Be prepared for a new tranny....
New shocks, new tranny, dings and dents....the shocks and tranny are going to cost you......there are a lot of trucks for sale out there right now because of the price of gas, and if you're not in a hurry you can probably find one for 7-8k in better condition.

And the auto trader has it listed for $5950--? not $6400. If you really want it even though it has those issues, lowball 'em.

you should go get a toyota paseo or corolla or something for like 2-3K and save money that you would spend fixing this ram and buying gas and in a few years buy you a new generation ram.

I'm driving a dodge neon right now. I just need a truck to haul things with.

I'm looking for either a ram or a dakota, v8 + 4x4 preferably long bed. I'll be hauling my motorcycle around and it would be nice to have a toolbox back there as well.

well, there's no guarantee that the shudder you felt had anything to do with the tranny. could it have possibly been a sputter or miss in the engine? if it was the tranny, it may be a very bad thing. if you check out my post on here "tranny rebuild kits" there are some good rebuild kits for under $500 available...not just back to stock, but more of an overhaul with upgrades. but, in all honesty, i would do a thorough look. it's never good to buy a vehicle with suspected problems, because they always tend to only get worse...something to consider. fluid seepage---no big deal, just needs new gaskets/clean up. if you do decide to go for it, definitely try it in 4WD first---lo and hi. just make sure you drive in a straigt line if you're on dry ground. don't buy it without trying the 4WD to listen for grinding and clanking. go with your gut!
