In tough in-house testing
Porsche, Dodge Viper and the GM Corvette engineering teams
have all selected Mobil One synthetic.

No major automaker has selected Royal Purple or Amsoil.

Delo and Rotella are better than average oils.
Cost has little to do with performance
Why the custom blend? Did ya just have it laying around or is it a chemistry experiment?
well its a rather long and complicated story. The store only had 1 gal of delo left so i grabbed a quart of rotella to go with it.

cost usuially does have something to do with performance, but obviously not in this instance. I agree delo and rotella are some of the better oils out there, but at $10 a gallon...that price cant be beat. so +1, +1.

Theres also something to be said about manufacturers being able to produce the ammount of oil needed to supply such a large order. I do not believe that they would be able to hold the same niche in the aftermarket sector while trying to produce enough oil to meet the demands of the manufacturers. On top of that, I would venture to guess marketing has a big part to do with it. The first time I heard of royal purple when I didnt know jack I was frightened to put it in to say the least, Im sure that at that stage in my knowledge of automobiles I was quite comperable with the average person, which is who manufacturers market to.

I think I am going to switch to full synthetic and go every 6 months/6K miles. If you think about it, this cost is about equal to regular oil every 3 months/3K miles, plus you're putting in a better product. Having said that, what is a good filter that would last for 6 months/6K? I saw some Mobil 1's at Autozone. What else is a good one?

Ya I'm sure Mobil didn't work out some deal with the manufacturers
Kinda like "hey if you say Mobil 1 is factory fill in your performance engines we'll give you the oil free and some cash" sounds like a sweet deal huh?

The K&N filter is a good one, as I said, it is what I use and is one of the best oil filters you can get.

For a 5.2 or 5.9 engine, the part number is HP-2004.

I also use the Mobil 1 filter when I can get them though. Same quality as the K&N, but my local Checkers stopped carrying anything but the high mileage Mobil 1 filters. With only 57500 miles on it, my pickup is several thousand short of that mark.

But, like someone also said, its just oil. Synthetic is best, but as long as you don't buy cheapo-stuff and change it when you're supposed to, you should be good to go.

Well, I looked at Wally World today, and I am going to go with Valvoline Max Life 10W30 Fully Synthetic. Of all the brands of oil that they had, Mobil 1 and Valvoline were the only two which offered a high mileage formula in the full synthetic. With about $18 for the oil and about $10 for the filter, I figure you can't beat it for 6 months. It's actually cheaper than doing regular oil every 3 months by about $4. Do you all think that any full synthetic oil out there is good enough for a 6 month/6K mile interval?

Well amsoil says it's good for 25,000 miles. Or 15,000 miles on an older vechile, or one that does alot of stop and go and long idling. I change mine every 7,000 miles and it still seems fine when I change it. My engine doesn't burn one drop of oil with 107,000 miles on the clock. Knock on wood.

I hear nothing but good stuff about Amsoil, as well as Royal Purple, but I just can't bring myself to pay $7-$10/qt. for oil...especially when I canget 5 qts. ofanother synthetic for about $20. I guess if you only changed it once a year it wouldn't be that bad, but I couldn't bring myself to leave any oil in my truck for more than 6 months or so.How does the new oils work as far as time? I know they have the oils that say 7K or 15K life, but what about the length of time in your engine. What if you drive a vehicle 5K miles a year, can you leave the 15K oil in there for 3 yrs? Don't sound good to me!
