I have 1997 Ram 1500 4x4 5.9 V8 automatic. I have done a search on the net to find out which transmission I have but I come up with 2 choices... Is it the 46RH or the 46RE? Some sites say they changed over to electronic controls in 1997, others say 1996. How do I find out?

I think they switched to the 46RE in 1996 (OBD-II was introduced this year, so it would make sense). You can find out exactly what you have by taking your VIN to the dealer and getting a free Star Network Report. It'll list all the equipment and options your truck has.

 

The '97's ALL had the 46RE. I'm pretty sure '97 was the first year, and the 46RH was still used in '96. Everything I found in my research for my trans swap stated that.

 

Thanks for the replies, i'll take my vin # to the dealer and confirm it. My truck has tranny issues, might go with the NV4500 conversion, but I found a 46RE from a '99 in great shape with low miles for cheap, might just replace it.
