Of course it's wider. When reading a metric tire size, the first number represents the width of the tire. I see this on here daily where people think the first number represents the height. I'm not quite sure where this comes from other than misunderstanding because the standard measurements call out the height first.

I would say just go with the 285's. I THINK the 295's will be a little wider but im not 100% sure. Im sure someone like cereal could help you with that.

From my limited research, the 265 75 is "considered" max on a 7" rim. That just means a wider tire is squeezed inward too much at the rim causing abnormal wear in the center and rubbing issues. Now, having said that, many, many owners have 285s on their stock rims. (Not to mention "off-road" rims, which are 8".) Personally, the look of a 265 looks just right on the stock 7" rims. Anything bigger looks much better on wider wheels.
Whatever you decide, it will be better than the stupid tiny 245s. Just my 1.5 pennies.
