oil pressure is low
i have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 with a 318 v8. the oil pressure is fine until i hit the gas a little then it drops to 0 but when i get on the gas the pressure goes back up. the oil level is perfectly fine. i really need help on this on
help 95 5.2 1500 p/u runs fine when cool, and when left to idle. But if you drive it for a little bit and stop at a light oil pressure drops. Then not to long after that motor loses all power but still idles, really ruff. pls help
i had something similar in mine drop the oil pan and make sure sludge isnt clogging up the pickup screen and then check the oil pump and make sure that its working right
One thing to remember about our Magnum engines is that they are computer controlled. The oil pressure sending unit sends signals to the computer providing it with the oil pressure. It is posisble the computer is causing the loss of power due to the low/no oil pressure input from the sending unit.
Before pulling the oil pan remove the oil pressure gauge, yea I know it can be a real b?*&@#, and attach a mechanical gauge into the engine. Drive the truck some and see if you are still having the same issues and if your oil pressure is really going down. BTW, doing this WILL cause a CEL for low oil pressure since the sending unit is disconnected from the computer.
If you have oil pressure issues, then you need to at a minimum pull the pan, oil pickup tube, and oil pump. You can replace the oil pump and pickup tube for less than $60. The pan gasket is re-usable. When you do this also replace your oil filter in case it also is plugged.
If you have good oil pressure then the problem is more than likely a faulty oil pressure sending unit. Go to the local parts store and buy a new one. Before you install it though or re-install your original sending unit, pull your coil wire and turn the engine over just enough to have a little oil push out the hole where the sending unit mounts. That will clear out any gunk that might be caught in the passage.
Hope this helps. There is a lot of info here on the site about oil sending units, oil pumps, and oil pressure. Just do a search here in the 2nd gen section and you'll find it.

+1 on the mechanical gauge. there are too many variables (sender, wire, computer, gauge itself) that may be wrong, and you may not actually have an oil pressure problem at all. Mechanical gauge is the next step.
