Default gear question

my 1996 360 1500 should have 4 speeds correct? I feel only 3 shifts and my truck doesn't go past 72-74 mph and runs about 3200 rpm's at that. Any ideas? I plan on putting in some of that RP Gear oil in when my bank account exceeds 20 bucks, lol. Maybe a tps mod is in order? And I think I do have a plenum leak, and I smell coolant when I turn the truck off after driving. Man this sucker is a mechanics special i swear lol.

Make sure you Overdrive off button isn't pushed in. It's deffinetly in 3rd gear if it's at 3200 rpms at 75 mph.

Ya know, the button is kind of loose. I think whoever installed the stereo deck prior to me having the truck, yanked out all the dash parts instead of popping it out, so even the cup holder, when you pull it out, yanks off the dash bezel. So if i push the OD button i just physically push the button console further into the dash. I'll try playing around with it but it is kind of a concern. at 75 mph I should be traveling around 2200 rpm's or so right?

Yeah, so i'm way over. If the OD Button is malfunctioning, is it a serious pain to get that working?

Well I took it out on the parkway to try to get it up to 75 and there was too much action on the highway so i couldnt see the rpm range, but i pushed the button in so the yellow light came on, and it drove better around town but i couldnt really tell on the parkway as i was doing about 2800 rpm at 55.

I don't think it would make a difference around town because your truck won't go into overdrive below 40mph (Pretty sure it's 40mph anyway)

My truck is an interesting thing let me tell you, lol. I'm reading the service manual and it seems to me that however the O/D switch was messed with in terms of the whole dash popping off, I think a wire is loose or the fuse is blown. When i start the truck the yellow light is off, and when I push it in, the yellow light comes on, but there's no significant difference.

the only thing i know about transmissions is that there's either a stick and an extra pedal or there's not. But i know a little about math and you should only feel 3 shifts. 1-2, 2-3, 3-4.

Yeah i realized what i typed lol. It's hard for me to decipher whether it's just crappin out in 4th, or not shifting at all. I start up (1st), shift (2nd), shift again, into 3rd. so I guess I meant to say 3 gears and 2 shifts. But sometimes it feels like there's a 3rd shift, but It doesn't sustain and regardless, 3200 rpm at 72 mph isn't right. even when i continue to press the pedal slowly, no slamming, it'll just climb to 4k.
