EVAP system
I got a 1999 dodge ram 1500 5.9 L 360 5inch lift.... my check engine light is onand it has beenburning gas horribly worse then usual. My brother from what he says he did a diagnostic test and it gave him a code and the code is for the EVAP system, that it has a gross leak...well all i really now bout the evap system is that it helps with gas mileage and something to do with circulating the fumes from my gas tank to the engine or something...i dont now ive looked at the lines and i dont see any leaks at all ... o and i have till feb 28 to get this truck smogged, any help would be nice right now thanks
i have a gross leak also in the evap system andlike he said its usaully the gas cap, but ive tried 4 different gas caps including the mopar one from the dealership and none worked now i have to check all hoses or you can go to a shop and they will put asmoke type substance into the system and it will pinpoint the leak , kinda like whenthey put dye into your oil or coolant system and run a black light over it to check for leaks, at least this is what they told me, i have a feeling its the hose thats runs to the top of the gas tank but have'nt had time to drop the tank and look, and yes gas milage went down a ton
I will Guarantee you that the gas cap is not the problem. On Almost every ram, this problem occurs because of a retarded design flaw. If you look underneath the back of your cab on the passenger side right near the muffler, you will see a black plastic canister. This is a filter for the evap system. on top of that canister, there is a three lines that enter and exit, but there is one large one that comes from the engine compartment. feel around the end of this line where it enters the top of the canister. Chances are you will find that it is split. This results, because that line makes a 90 degree bend into the canister, and does not have a hose clamp on it. After time, this line splits. If you don't have time to fix it properly, just slide the line off, clean it with rubbing alcohol, and wrap it very tightly with electrical tape. slide the lineback on and put a hose clamp on it. You won't need to un-bolt the canister assembly to do this. If you do, it won't really help you very much. This quick fix should hold you over, and last just as long as a new hose! Try looking at this before paying a bunch of money for a smoke machine test.
ok i treid a new gas cap and that didnt work and the i looked at the line going to the top of the canister it wasnt split but i still put a hose clamp on it just to be safe and im still havin the same problem theMIL light is on and im still getting the code p0455 and ya they wont smog it till i get it fixed any other ideas what it might be
