Default Ford 9" Rear Swap

I wanted a solid 9.25 but after much searching no one has full or mini spools for the Chrysler. I could have the my open diff welded but with big tires, a v8 engine and still being a dd, I don't think it would hold. The Ford 9" however has just about everything I could dream of and cheap too. My question is would it be possible to swap the Ford 9" in place of the 9.25? I would pull all the parts from the junk yard so cost won't be a problem, but would would I need other than the actual differential? Would I need new mounts or new axles or a new driveshaft. Basically, would it be worth it to swap a Ford 9"? Oh and no, I don't want a locker or a limited slip, spool is what I need for my off road application.

The Ram 2500's ran a dana 60, have you checked into that option at all?

No prob. One problem I forsee is that the half ton axles only run 5 lug so your going to need different rims and full tire rotation won't be as easy. But, that would be a good excuse to look into a dana 60 front end swap Or, you could 5 lug axle shafts for the rear 60.

Actually, some of the older Ford 1/2 tons ran a 9" I wish I could remember the specifics, but I just pulled some tires from a friends truck that are the 5 luggers from a Ford 9".

I would suggest the D60 just because I've seen it done before. I just don't know much about what you may face with the 9"

You should be able to get your hands on a decent dana 70/60 or 60/60 combo for $700-$1000

First, I have 2wd so I have no idea where the front diff idea came from. The whole point of getting a spool for me is the $$$ savings so $700-1000 for Dana's is no-go. I know that Ford 1500's have a 5x5.5 axle shafts and a 9" rear so maybe.... Do I need a need a new drive shaft? Also, could I fit the Ford diff in the Dodge axle or would I need to swap over to the Ford axle?

I'm pretty sure that 9.25 case won't accept your 9" diff. You'll need the entire housing. Check your pinion angles between the two, that'll let you know if you need a new driveshaft. You'll also want to check the suspension mounting, shocks, etc. etc.

$700-1000 is for two and that's probably from a junk yard with shafts, diffs, housings, hubs, etc. So in half would be 350-500. I don't know, but I'm not seeing you find a Ford 9" and making all the necessary adaptations for less than that. That is most likely why I don't hear about it being done much. I'd bet the 60 swap is most common because it's easiest and cheapest. That being said, I've never personally done it, but from observation that is where I stand.

I completely missed that you had a 2wd. Well I guess you don't have to worry about the front axle that you don't have.
