Lucas is good as an oil additive, or when your transmission took a dump as a last resort, but adding it to prevent damage is not worth the trouble.

I figure if I start running RP, I may as well not spend money on any other additives, although I did notice that Lucas has a full-synthetic oil stabilizer[&:] As for the tranny, it's got about 85K on it...no problems yet (knock on wood), but I just wanted to do the Lucas additive for 1 reason...it says it lowers op temps. But I guess when I do the cooler, it should be fine...

RP also says it's recommended for Dexron or Mercon trannies...nothing about Dodge ATF +4.

Well, manufacturers claim lots of things so take it as you will, but here's info straight from their website and I have talked to one of their reps via email about their atf and oil compatibility. Btw, I got mine for about $6/qt.

Guys,

Before I move back to TN this May, I am going to service my tranny with new fluid/filter and add a cooler. I want to put good fluid in it, but I think that is going to be too $$$. I looked at the RP Max ATF, but it is like $10-$12/qt. Amsoil is very $$$, too.RP also says it's recommended for Dexron or Mercon trannies...nothing about Dodge ATF +4. Now at Wally World, they have the Supertech (everyone's fav brand)ATF +4, at about $3/qt., and they have the Mopar ATF +4 for about $5/qt..
If you are worried about spending $5/quart for Mopar ATF+4 then you are driving the wrong vehicle. Your V-8 can't be getting more than 12-15 MPG.Add the costs of maintenance on big 4x4's then you may want to consider a Dodge Neon. If I have you all wrong, then annie-up the $2 and buy Mopar and the tranny cooler - go big like a 32k unit.

Remember what I said, you don't want the transmission operating too cool, with that cooler I showed you, you should be alright.

Yeah I saw that, but wow, still lots of dough. Thecheapest I've found it is $9.75/qt,with tax included. The Amsoil website says the 46RE capacity is 10 qts. Assuming that is correct, that's almost $100 on tranny fluid.[sm=escape.gif] I'm not dropping that much for a factory 46RE...I mean, would you put chrome spinners on a rusted out Pinto???

Get the cheapest ATF possible, transmissions arent that picky.

Don't know if I want to go THAT far... The Mopar isn't too bad at around $5/qt. About $50 for a fill...as opposed to $100 for RP...[:@]

I am very familiar with 2nd gen rams, believe me, lol. I just dont buy into having to have all this special expensive transmission fluid. Just as an example, my father has a 98 1500 that he has put dexron/mercon in since day one, he put 175,000 on it before it started leaking out the front main and he just decided to get it rebuilt, although it still shifted fine. However, I definetly agree, ATF+4 should be the only thing you use in the transmission, but cheap ATF+4 shouldnt cause any damage.
