Default what do you guys think

Ok I am faced with a situation. I have a 95 dodge ram extended cab with 245,000 miles. Truck has a new motor in it with about 30,000 miles and a new tranny with 3,000 miles. Interior shows it age. 2 wheel drive, cold a/c and good heat. The body is a little beat up from my dad using it as a work truck.

I am wanting a 4x4. I found a guy that has a 96 4x4 with 220,000 miles on it. He has a new motor in his with 20,000 miles, BUT he said his is still on the original transmission with 220,000 miles. His truck has more options then mine, he has power seats and power mirrors, and a better body then mine. interior is the same.

I went and drove it yesterday and it ran good. the 4x4 worked. The only problem I noticed was the skid plate was a little wet from the transmission and when I got on it on the road 2nd gear didn't want to **** until I let out of the idle. It ran up to like 5,000 rpms and I finally took my foot out of it and it shifted. Is this a problem, or suppose to be like that?

He will do a even trade with me plus $300 cash. I will be giving up my new transmission for a used one, but gaining my 4x4.

If it does not want to shift into 3rd gear, that means the tranny is almost done. That is what goes wrong with every single one of these trannys eventually.

How much would he take for the truck straight up? If it's a really good price you could buy his and swap your transmission in. Then take and sell your old truck. Figure out your book values and go from there, but don't expect to get book with an odometer that reads 245k (even if the motor is newer).

In all honesty, He wouldn't be willing to take your truck as a trade if he didn't know he had a $2500 repair bill coming in the near future.

I asked him why he wanted to do it and he stated he wanted better gas mileage. When I went to his place he has like 5 dodges for sale, so I think he buys and sells them or something. His truck does book value higher then mine does. The tranny did shift just fine, it had a harder time shifting when I had the gas peddle stuck to the floor. After I took my foot off the floor then it shifted just fine.

The no shift wot could mean the tv cable needs adjustment. I mean after 200,000, im sure there might be a little stretch in it. Just looking on the bright side. BTW, are they both 1500's, 2500's?

both 1500's. I really want the 4x4 but I don't want the tranny to go out right away. I know I will have to have it rebuilt eventually, just would like to get some use out of it. What if I was to put a new filter and new fluid in it, would that give me some life?

For an AT? Well, it seems to me from your responses you've already made up your mind that you want it. But you can find 2nd gens with much lower miles and for pretty cheap nowadays with gas prices and all. The thing with that many miles is that other little thing are bound to be going wrong eventually. You can get nickeled and dimed to death with the little stuff.
