Default My first trans issue

vehicle is a 1997 Ram 1500 4x4 360 auto

Today i was cruising here in town at about 35mph (maybe 1500 rpm's or so, pretty low)when all the sudden the tach buries itself, truck is actually slowing down a little, like being in neutral.i pulled into my destination & checked the trans lines for leaks & checked the fluid level, nothing out of the ordinary there.

later today i drove across town & noticed that cruising at about 30 is ok, but trying to go faster than thatisn't working well. while traveling about 30mph, pushing on the gas kinda free-revs the engine till about 3,000rpms, then it acts like the TC locks & i can go faster, but won't maintain the higherspeed unless i'm at 3,000+ rpms. if i take it nearly to redline it'll shift into the next gear, 3rd and O/D seem to be unaffected.

then on the way home i realized that if i'm going 35'ish or below & stand on the pedal, it won't kick down into 1st like it normally would. pulled into an empty parking lot, stopped and put the selector in "1", instead of the stump-pulling torque feeling it normally would have, it felt like it was trying to take off in 2nd gear, same thing happened with selector in "2", then taking off from a stop in "D" felt even worse, like trying to leave a stoplight in 3rd gear in a manual trans car.

so by that description can anyone give me an idea of what to check out? TV cable? trans bands? or is it totally effed? the only time i've experienced this before was 2 years ago when the torque converter on my grand prix got fried & took the whole trans with it.

its beyond the simple repairs, I think, it will probably take a crap in the near future. Get it fixed, the sooner the better

Ok I know this may sound wierd but it could save you a ton of money. I would first check your Cat coverter. When all of this was happening to you, did you happen to hear (every now and again and mainly on a slow takeoff) what sounded like a little rattling near your tranny? Almost like some marbles rolling around in a tin can. It won't happen all of the time. Next, I would borrow or purchase an ODB scanner and plug it in and read those codes. For $100 bucks or less, it's a VERY HANDY tool and will last you the life of your truck. I bet you get either P0720 or P0740 and some codes reading misfires. I would simply remove your tranny speed sensor and clean it. It should have a bunch of goo on it. Also, have you done an ATF change? Do the fluid and filter change and adjust your bands, clean the speed sensor and check your cat. While your at it, it would be a great time to do a spark plug, cap, wireand rotor change too. Including the cost of the scanner, and everything else mentioned you would spend about $200 bucks or less, have a tool for life, improve your fuel economy, and fix your problem. I hope this helps. (this is of course if your cat isnt bad. If it is, you might be eligible for a free replacement)

I tell you this because the EXACT same thing happened to me. Instead of getting the tranny fixed (which every shop will tell you YES its your tranny give me $2500 bucks), I did my own fixings first as described above and it fixed it perfectly! And of course there is always the possiblity of the TC, but I would most certainly check the above things first.

a couple months ago i thought i was having a trans issue that ended up being my cat plugged. ButI don't think the cat acting upwould cause the free-reving and shifting problems I'm having.ATF and filter haven't been changed since i've owned the truck (i've only put on about 5K miles, not sure when or if it was done before that). The check engine light is on, so I'll go pull the codes tomorrow.

if i have a chance, i'll take a look at the speed sensor also, that's the one at the far back of the trans correct?

The catalytic converters do break up inside and suddenly plug their rear exit passage.
When this happens there is a severe loss of power.

The Dodge 1996 to 1999 catalytic converters were defective and do plug
and there is a USA wide recall to put a new catalytic converter on for free:

I firmly believe the 1992 to 1995 Dodge Catalytic converters were also defective.
