Highway O/D Problems
Hey all,
Today I was on the highway, driving around 65-70 with O/D on, and it felt like the engine was shaking on me. Check engine light started flashing. It wasn't a subtle thing either, I mean I was literally bouncing in my seat. I was running it around 1900 +/- RPMS. It was right on the border to when the truck would normally downshift into 3rd, so I presume the O/D gear was working too hard? Never happened before. Immedietally turned off O/D, the shaking stopped, and CEL stopped flashing. Took it down to Autozone to have the codes read (with their ****ty reader) and there were no codes displayed.
I'm no expert, but I would have to think this was a transmission issue. Doesn't happen driving around town, or with O/D off. Haven't taken it back out on the highway to check if it's still a problem or if it was a fluke. Will keep posted but would like any input on the situation.
Oh and my truck is a 99 Ram 1500, 318, 4x4, auto. About 111,500 on the ticker.
Thanks,
-Dan

My truck does the same thing just not as bad as yours. Mine is subtle. Enough to be annoying. Kick it out of overdrive and it stops. I am under the impression that it is a torque converter problem.

It might be the TC. The only thing I am not having that you are is the RPM flux/surges. I had that happen to me about a year ago (would spike and return like 200-400 RPMs) but just as I was going to fix the TPS, the problem diminished. Hopefully it's just acting up again, but in a different way. I'm going to clean/replace it tomorrow.
Will keep everyone posted on results. Any other suggestions welcome.

I've been having the same problem now for about 2 years, so I've been told the air in the vents will also move around or switch to different vents. I've taken it into a bunch of shops, nobody seems to be able to fix this..
Okay guys, sorry it's been awhile since I posted last. Just an update, I don't think the issue has to deal with the tranny anymore. It only acts up when it's A. Raining, B. Foggy, or C. Wet Roads. I guess I'm narrowing it down to water somehow getting into the motor. Maybe through the pas side wheel well cut-out for the shock mount? Any ideas?
FWIW, I can't tell whether it's an engine or transmission problem. It just feels like it's bucking and bogging out. Sort of like a two-stroke that's jetted too rich and is choking itself.

You have an electrical issue, and when you say it's water related, that leads me to believe you have possibly bad plug wires. My older brother had issues many years back on his Volaire when the plug wires had worn so much that a severely humid day rendered his car a bitch to start, and a rainy one would kill it. Smiliar symptoms to yours when it started. It could also be the distributor.
Water is NOT getting inside of the engine.
