Anyone else considering sellin due to gas?
I was out rock crawling with a buddie in his Jeep, and he was saying how he has 4.56 gears sittin at home he wants me to help put in. Then I started to go into how I want 4.56 gearing for my truck too, but need to save up a bit since its a bit pricey. Then he goes into asking me if im really going to keep my current truck, and pointed out how much im spending on gas.
I have a 98 1500 4x4 5.9L, 37 inch tires, on 3.55 stock gearing. Im getting 8 - 10 miles to the gallon all depending how im driving, even with 4.56 gearing, and going down to 35 inch tire size, my milage isnt going to make a major increase. Within the next few years im sure gas is going to continue to climb slowly but surely, as it has been.
My main question is, is anyoneelse consideringthe same thing? I started to adda 5 year span of filling up this truck with gas, it isnt looking good, I could have a down payment on a little home by how much I could be saving if I ditched the lifted truck, and got another truck that didnt suck my wallet dry. I should of really thought about this before I bought it, but only being 19, and able to offord my first car, I jumped on the lifted truck as soon as I saw it! Damn my youngness!
Just something thats been running through my head the last few weeks, would appreciate anyone elses opinions!

lol so you bought a truck you couldn't afford. Sell it to someone who deserves it. You can always buy one when you're older. I mean hell you can still buy cars from the 60s so when you're old cars from the ninetys will still be around.
What do you mean by someone that deserves it? I worked my *** off to offord it. And I can offord to keep it, its the thought of how much more I could be saving is all.

At the end of the day, my advice is this..... if you really love the truck....dump some money into a daily driver econo box. Something like an old Civic or a Camry. I've got a Camry wagon that gets about 35mpg on the highway, so it's not too bad to drive when needed. It's just old. There are plenty of these kinds of cars laying around that need some minor work that could be had for dirt cheap. Even getting something with a V6 would still be 24-30mpg depending on how you drive it.
I say keep the truck and get a better DD...
Cereal Killer: That's a bit of an ******* statement dont you think??? Not to mention, EVERYONE is feeling the pinch of gas prices...not just younger kids...

sellin hell no , got to much in it already ,park it yes as its starting not to be my DD..

I've done the math for myself, and it would make little sense for me to buy anything other then a cheap 4cyl or 6cyl beater car as mentioned above (actually been looking into that the last few weeks). That really is the best option from a financial standpoint in my situation. For the money I would spend buying something newer that gets great gas mileage, then insuring it, tagging it, and putting gas in it too, I could just put gas in my truck for a long time to come. I'd rather be driving my truck in that case.
When the truck runs out of life, i'll probably try to find something that is more economical, but it will still be a truck. Some people can make the switch over to a car with no problem. I need a truck though for the stuff I do with it.

I feel your pain. My Mustang gets 8-9 MPG on the highway. Gets close to the same in town as long as you putt around. But since its not my DD, I tend to hammer on it alot on the weekends and really go through the fuel. Get a good econimical compact car and keep the truck. The fuel you save will pay for the car.
Heh, remember back in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit?
Yep, gas prices skyrocketed. I had a 1999 Dodge Ram QC back then, and I loved it! But the price of gas killed me - so I decided to part with the truck.
That was the biggest mistake I ever made. If I had struggled through the pain of gas prices and kept my truck, I would have owned it by now. However, I convinced myself that trading it in for a more economical truck was the only answer, so I traded off my Ram, and bought a crappy Colorado.
Never again will I sell a vehicle because of gas prices.
So, in short, keep your Ram, and look into buying a beater DD. Older Civics get pretty decent mileage and are fairly cheap. Same with the older Neons. Even better, see if you can get an older VW Jetta or Golf diesel - they will go FOREVER on a single tank of gas!
(EDIT)
Also, have you considered getting the fuel filter replaced? I'm fully aware that it's an in-tank filter, but it is possible that the filter is due for replacement.

Would I sell my truck? NO. I bought mine with gas pricesaround 3 a gallon and I had already planned accordingly. I knew what I was stepping into. So you got a little blindsided, this **** happens in life. If you enjoy the truck and can continue to afford it I'd say keep it. Sounds to me like it doubles as a recreation vehicleand when you have a recreation vehicle it typically means you have to sacrifice something else that costs you money.
Oh and if you keep the 37's you may want to consider 4.88's instead of 4.56's.
