Default Brakes Pulsing when applied

I bought this '99 4x4 at aution 123,000 miles. The brakes pulse when applied. I remember a buddy having a new dodge back in 2001 or so. His truck did the same thing and no mechanic or dealer was able to tell him why. I figured it was his ABS engaging. But both his and my truck do this every time you hit the brakes. Actually, it seems to be worse when you moderatley press the pedal. If you press harder, it seems to be less pulsing. If you ride the brake to a stop in about 1000', then it's almost non existant.

I do need new brakes now. But I'm not sure that's the entire issue. I will get the rotors checked as well. I just think there's another issue since a brand new truck with less than 20,000 miles on it was doing the same thing.

Thanks.

Well i can relate..I had a bad ABS/Wheel Speed sensor. When i would usethebrakes it would pulse like no other thing I had felt. An whenever i would brake the speedo would jump between 120-0 over and over again.I went to my handy dandy stealership and bought a ABS/Wheel Speed Sensor and it never happened again. Now that was on a 2wd. I dont know if they use the sensor in the same spot but it should be on the top of the pumpkin. Id check that out. Mine was broken off.

sounds like the thickness variation of your rotors is out of spec..

With the pulsing happening worse at lower speeds, I would say to check your rotors. Sounds like they are warped to me.

Idk if were talking about the same thing, but I have a wierd brake problem as well. Infact I have almost gotten into two accidents because of it. For me if I push the pedel a little, it slows down. If I push the pedel hard, it will lock up. If I push the pedel moderately... you better hope you can stop. For me, sometimes when I push moderately, you can feel the truck brake, then all of a sudden with you foot still applied, it will feel as if the truck releases the brake, does one full rotation of the wheels, and will re-engage. I have no idea what it is. The abs and brake light came on only one time prb 6 months ago and never came back. I'm gonna do my brakes after this semster is over. I never have a problem with my speedo either. It usually happens on a down hill in the same spot like if i hit a small pot hole (when the light came on the first time). she will do the release, roll, re-engage. She has done it on flat ground too like when i ended up slowing down for a yellow light and ended up in the middle of the intersection (figured i wouldn't gun it like usual...), or the time a tractor trailer cut me off and almost got a taste of his trailer. yup.. well let me know what you come up with Houston4x4.

Unplug your wheel speed sensor on the rear end. Take it for a drive and see if it still does it. If it does then it could be your front brakes or rear. The best way to tell if it is your rear is to HOLD the E-brake release (DO NOT LET GO through thisrear break test)whileSlowelypressing the E-brake while the truck slows all the way to a stop or close. If you feel the truck hop or jeark at any speed then there is a problem in the rear. If no hop or jeark of any kind but with the speed sensor unhooked then you have a front break problem. The wheel speed sensor being unhooked should not allow the ABS to work at any time. I unhooked mine on my truck after it caused me to wreck when I think without it I could have stopped. Good luck.
