You can take it to an auto store like autozone or O'riellys and have them check it for exact amps it is putting out right now. Otherwise being a 98 I would find out if you have the tow package, if you do haveitthen you have a 136amp alternator, ifyou dont have itthen you have a 117amp alternator.

Hank, I have swapped out the two different alternators
a few times without any problem. The one that's on the
motor right now is a 53027913, ans the spare in the
tool box is a 53008651. I don't even remember what
came stock on my truck.

Hank , I think you brought this up a few weeks ago. It piqued my
curiousity. The '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9V8's did come with a 150 amp
alternator from the factory. I'm guessing it had largely to do with the
electric fan that they also came with. I just picked one
up to see if it would work on my Dakota. The answer is, no for any vehicle
before 1998. Different
connectors than on my '95. I thought there had been a switch in terms of
connectors
at some point and it turns out that it was in '98 and up. The part number
for anyone that is curious is 56041394AA for this piece.
