Fire update, have choices need advice
Ok,
Like I had said, there is a 1999 in a junkyard with a 5.2. But they will not give me engine components (wiring and connectors are OK, just no sensors or anything bolted/attached to the engine). They siad it is still a good motor and that they want to sell it. They said 750 for the engine and 450 for the installation. Should I just have them do it? I have been to junkyards and there are no 5.2s that are "bad engines" that i can take parts from. All I wanted was the intake (1999, so no divider) TB (with all sensors)and injectors...basically the intake and everything connected to it. THey said no.
Would you guys give them 750 for the engine and just grab the components that you need? Basically leave them the shortblock? The engine looks like it was replaced because its so clean and the stickers on the Valve Covers are not faded at all. It has 170,000 miles on it. Mine only has 140, and i know its good...no smoke.
Whatwould you guys do?
Are there any differences with 1999 heads as opposed to 1996 heads? May as well swap the heads while I have the intake off.
Guess I can buy the engine, and send the block to a machine shop, replace the bearings, honed, decked, .030 over, rings, etc. But right now mi just want to get back on the road.
I haven't taken anything apart yet. but i get off work early today, and maybe I can at least get some accessories off so i am ready to pull the intake.
I already ordered a fastman and 24# injectors. They cost 255 (TB 225, plus the 3 sensors 10 ea, thanks dan), and the injectors are the new Disc style ford BOSCH blue tops. Thats almost the price of the engine. So maybe i should have just gotten the engine. I just saw an excuse to get the fastman.
Also, would my PCM be fried if the wires were shorted?

Don't know about anything else, but it sounds like a good deal and a rip off at the same time.
Engine for $750 plus $450? Not bad. But to hear that they won't part out the engine - for a salvage yard, that sounds kinda shady. In all honesty, I think you may have made the better choice in the long run.

It is possible that your PCM has shorted out, but you have no way of telling until you try to start the truck. When I had my fire, I was fortunate to have a JET chip installed as it took the short and prevented damage to my PCM. Others have had no damage to the PCM with an engine compartment fire.
thanks for the advice. I am worried about the PCM too. That just gives me an excuse for a B&G though. Since they are not that much more than the mopar performance one that was in it.
