Disengaging 4WD
I get 11.6 mpg... my o2's are toast and I have a leaky plenum gasket. my motor has 158K or so on it... The best I've ever had was 14.5 mpg before my plenum started leaking... maybe your looking in the wrong place for your mpg issue.
when was the last tune up? air filter? How many miles on it?
1st thing I'd check is the 2 cats right next to the heads. get a temp measuring gun and measure the input temp and output temp and make sure the output is 75* or so hotter than the input temp. Mine were plugged once upon a time and my mpg was horrible, ended up taking out the #8 exhaust seat...

My truck only has 37000 mi. I know the plugs, cap and rotor need to be done because they are original. What led me to the idea that the 4WD may not be disengaging is that I can't turn the driveshaft by hand and it turns all of the time. The other 2 4wd's I have had (a 94 Suburban and a 88 Ranger) you could turn the driveshaft by hand when the vehicle was parked. I assumed the Dodge would be the same. I am planning on doing the tune-up stuff in the spring. After talking to a friend, he had a 2000 2500 with the 360 and he only got 12 mpg. I guess I maybe expecting too much. I was looking for maybe 14 or 15 hwy. Thanks for the info.

Date: February 11, 2002
Models: 2002 (BR/BE) Ram Truck 2500, 3500
NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 2500 AND 3500 (BE/BR) RAM TRUCKS BUILT AFTER JANUARY 4, 2002 AND EQUIPPED WITH FRONT AXLES WITH THE FOLLOWING PART NUMBERS: 52070136AO, 52070137AO, 52070138AP, AMD 52070139AO.
Overview:
This bulletin involves a mid-2002 model year deletion of the front axle disconnect system on 2002 (BE/BR) 2500 and 3500 Ram Trucks. This change effects the front axle, transfer case and engine/headlamp 2nd dash wiring harnesses.
Discussion:
1. The vehicles Involved still retain Shift On the Fly (SFO) capability, however with this change, the front driveshaft will now turn continuously when the vehicle is being driven.
2. When the vehicle is stopped In 2WD, the front driveshaft will no longer spin freely.
3. The 4WD Indicator light on the instrument panel is now controlled by a switch on the transfer case.
4. If there is a mechanical problem causing loss of 4WD the indicator light will be "ON" if the shifter is in the 4WD "HI" or "LO" position.
5. If the indicator light is not functioning properly when the transfer case shifter is in the 4WD position, the transfer case switch, dashboard indicator light or circuit should be diagnosed first.
6. Parts required for service on vehicles with this change are readily available already identified in the Mopar Parts Catalog.
NOTE:. DUE TO THE TIMING OF THIS CHANGE THIS INFORMATION IS NOT REFLECTED IN THE SERVICE MANUAL (PUBLICATION # V 81-370-02057).
NOTE: DIAGNOSTIC AND SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR THE FRONT AXLE DISCONNECT SYSTEM, RELATED VACUUM LINES, THE TRANSFER CASE SYNCHRONIZER ASSEMBLY, MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY, HUB, STRUTS, RETAINING RING, SLIDING CLUTCH AND SPRING SHOULD BE DISREGARDED. SERVICE INFORMATION TO SUPPORT THIS CHANGE IS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED AND WILL BE ON A FUTURE MDS2 CD RELEASE WHEN DEVELOPMENT IS COMPLETED.

wow thats good reading well I guess I will keep looking for some kind of hub lock unlock system thanks for that info I wonder if that has something to do with my shift light when I start my truck I see the light come on (the light to tell me when to shift) but when I am driving it does not come on to tell me when to shift. I brought the truck in to get this fixed and they told me that the model of this truck does not have this feature but he said all the wiring was there dont make since to me
