Doesn't this guy have solid axels? They aren't Dana 60 in the rear and 44 up front but they are still some tough axels...

And doesn't he have the 5.9 liter v8? Last I heard that thing can put out some power from a stock standpoint and can be built to easily put out over 400 horses...

And isn't this thing still a Dodge that you can beat the snott out of until your arms get tired?

I have to disagree with you on how it's just a 1/2 ton and not a 3/4 or 1 ton. The truck is still tough, and even though a 3/4 or 1 ton is tougher, it doesn't take much to beef up the chassis into a 3/4 ton. Just build that tranny up as best as possible with quality parts as well as craftsmanship, throw some 3/4 ton leaf springs in the rear, upgrade the brakes, and if and when the rear end finally goes out, swap it for a good Dana 60. What's so bad about that? I'd do it, and currently am looking into piecing it together for myself.

THe reason I say "if you want a big truck, don't buy a 1500" is that the 1500's have some issues that the 2500 and 3500 just don't have. They just aren't built up suspension wise (Dana 40's etc.) I'm not talking about height. I know a bunch of 1500 drivers will probably jump all over this thread, but screw them they know it's true. I used to have a Ford ranger and even though it was as HIGH as other trucks it wasn't as "Big" as they were....and then I had a half ton truck and even though it was as high as other trucks it didn't have the towing capability the durability and suspension of a bigger truck. You can't have a truck that is all things...there are trade-offs. You buy a 2500 or 3500 and you can't flip a bitch like you can in a 1500, I'm just saying if you want something in particular its better to buy the right truck and mod it to your needs, not buy a truck that isn't what you need and mod it into something else....You don't drop a Ducati engine in a vespa and go racing----. Granted--If you mod a 1500 enough you will eventually have a 2500---but it would have been easier to just buy a ****ing 2500 or 3500 in the first place.

No, the rear is a Chrysler 9.25

While it's not a bad axel, it has virtually no aftermarket support, and C clips suck.

The Chrysler 9.25" in the rear isn't the weak axle it's the Dana 44 up front. The 9.25 is a pretty good axle after you replace that POS LSD that comes in it from Dodge.

Originally I planned on doing an 1-ton axel swap, but now i'm thinking about finding a wrecked 2500 and swapping out the axels, tranny, front end components, and suspension(plus it'll net me an extra 2" of lift).

Depending on how far down the rabbit hole I feel like going I may try to find one with a 12 valve cummins in it and swap everything over. They don't make Regular cab short bed 2500s (which is gay) which would be perfect for me. A good work truck for the week, and a bad *** trail machine on the weekend.
You should look for a wrecked 2500 with a good drivetrain/chassis, and just cut it down to size and throw your body on there. You could do it, and it probably wouldn't be THAT muchworse (if any)than switching everything over. I have seen a few frame cut downs (they had one on Trucks last weekend), and they seem to be much more simple than you would think.
I'll take that into consideration depending upon the condition of the donor truck. My frame is almost perfect. Practically no rust at all. Same goes for the rest of the truck.

Agreed the 9.25" is a pretty good axle but like you said it doesn't have a lot of aftermarket support like the D60 does.

lol look what i started. lets starta new 1500 vs. 3/4 ton thread..this is what it would look like:

1500 Owner: I only had to do these mods (leaf springs, suspension, axles etc.)to make my truck like yours....
2500 Owner: Well I didn't have to do any mods and my truck barely cost more than your's did used....and mine can tow more than your's can.
1500 Owner:Well my 5.9L gets 2 mpg better than your v10 (or diesel)
2500 Owner: WOW really?
1500 Owner: Really.
2500 Owner: That's great. You can put all that money you're saving towards the 600$+ in mods you just had to do.
1500 Owner: You're an *******.
2500 Owner: Go Dodge.
1500 Owner: Go Dodge.

I'm glad we can all agree on something.

On a side note---I bet I paid less for my 2001 Dodge ram 2500 v10 with 99k miles on it (also excellent condition), than Hometheaterman or pcfixerpro paid for their 1500's.

I'm not to worried about towing capacity. I don't have anything THAT heavy. I'm just trying to make a bad *** offroad machine.

I don't know about pcfixerpro but I bet you did when it comes to mine. I paid almost 18k for mine. As you can guess from that I've had it for several years.
