My truck has a weird jumping idle.
hello, i have a 2001, 1500 dodge ram 5.9L
the engine keeps running a few seconds after i shut it off..
every once in a while it will sputter an backfire.
is the timing just off or is it the fuel filter or what?
well just ask me if i need to include more "symtoms" or just ask i i have experiemnced any symtoms.
thx.

im thinkin your experiencing pre ignition ping.now thats just from past experience and im not sure of the remedy.maybe do a search for that.i believe its related to the timing.sorry i cant be much more help.
Stic's right, dieseling can be timing related. It could also be a leaky injector (fuel drips into the combustion chamber after you turn off the truck, and the hot carbon in the cylinder can ignite it). I'm sure there are a few other possibilities, so hopefully someone else can chime in here too.
My 2001 Dakota 5.9 will do that some times... I wonder if it has anything to do with the giganta-cam? You have the stock cam in your truck still? I think my timing may be WAY to advanced though... I know that can do it. It usualy only sputters like 2 cylinders (dubbadump) sound after I shut it off. Rarely ever happens... I kinda like it though!!! lol.
Yeah it's stock but you may like that last rev after it shuts off at the moment but it can lead to further problems later. aka: better fix it now for $100 instead of later when the truck won't even start for $1000
