Newbie here!
If you have the digital odometer you cna try turning the key on-off-on-off-on (but don't turn it over) andsee if it throws a code.
If it does, then post the code here and somebody can probably tell you what is wrong.

I guess first thing is first though with the weather being like it is I have to get the heat working right.
This truck has been nothing but a headache since I got it with the heat. It takes it a long time to warm up and then even after the truck is warm it only blows hot air while driving or revving the motor. If you are sitting idle the air gets cool????? Any thoughts? I took it in and had radiator/heater core flushed to get it cleaned out and to make sure no air was in there...
Thermostat?
Heater Core?
Anything???

Guessing its the water pump. Do a search in the forum, you will find most people's issues are linked to the water pump.

my brother is a mechanic in southern Illinois so I called him and told him the problems I was having. he told me to check the vacuum line running from intake into the heater box. He says that this vacuum line controls the door in the heater box that switches from AC/Heat? The line looks fine and could not find any leaks.
UPDATE:
I was just reading about some people who are having the same problem and they said that is was fixed by "backflushin" the heater core.
Anyone know which is the inlet and outlet line on this truck? There is a top and bottom from what I can tell...

UPDATE: I have heat now for basically no money... It was a very simple fix and only took minutes. I read on another forum that this fix worked for Dakota owners so I thought I would give it a shot.
I had the fittings laying around (pictured) but you could buy them for less than $5.00 at any hardware store. You won't need anything fancy. You could also do this without getting this fancy but I wanted to have control of shutting the water off instead of relying on someone else or having to walk back and forth to shut off valve.
Disconnect the outlet line coming from heater core on passenger side.(The line in my 99 was connected with a splice right next to valve cover.) Disconnect the inlet line coming from water pump. You should place a bucket under this hose since this fluid will contian antifreeze and then you should dispose of it according to your state laws.
Screw the Ball Valve(3/4" threads) on to garden hose and tighten to keep from spraying water all over unwanted places on your engine. Screw Male Barb(5/8" barb) into opposite end of Ball Valve and again tighten securely. You then just need to insert barb into the outlet line on passenger side of engine compartment going to the heater core. Shut valve off and turn your water valve on. It will most likely take about 4-5 gallons to flush thoroughly.
I did this in about 30 minutes and I now have very hot heat once the truck warms up at all times. It was very simple and saved me large amounts of $$$ on a new heater core or paying a shop to do it for me.
