Default Bolt on Magnaflow Catalytic Converter Install, hard?

I called around and found that each shop wants to charge me anywhere from $300 to 900 to replace my cat. its rattling and annoying me.

So I want to put on something cheap, but able to last. I found the cat itself, but I can't weld... and I would have to ask around for a shop to weld it in. I did a search here and found that the CAT + welding is around $160 or so.

I found this, its more a bolt on kit...
Just wondering if anyone has tackled this themselves? I am no mechanic, but Ican twist a wrench and not afraid to get my hands dirty. I also plan on getting a new O2 sensor when i replace it.

Thanks for any advice.

If it's a bolt-on it shouldn't be difficult at all...but there's always that chance. I've never done bolt on cats, but I have done bolt on exhaust systems and never had any issues. I would say go for it...just spray some penetrator on all the bolts first, so you don't break one.

I'm in the same boat as you buddy. I want to get that direct bolt on one as well, I'm just curious if there's any welding toward the muffler section. I'm pretty sure the header y-pipe area; whatever the technical term may be; bolts on and off and just requires a few soak-in times of PB Blaster or Seafoam deep creep.

its not bad, just get new bolts for where it connects to the manifold, because mine were pretty rusty. otherwise its mabye a 2 hour job by yourself with basic tools. just be careful not to touch the ends of your o2 sensors. i bolted everything, and didnt have to weld anything

When taxes come in, this is the system I am going with too(same thing at Summit). I am going to wire wheel the nuts and then when they look clean put on the penatrant. I think I will try the blaster everyone is talking about. Before you do anything, please make a drawing and measure everything. Flowmaster Super 44, stock tailpipe.

I am thinking about those remflex gaskets that crush down for the manifold/headpipe union.

wound up getting a Walker 50505 with a 8yr/80K warranty installed with both O2 sensors replaced for $825.
truck runs tight. hard to explain, but I was getting a ticking sound at higher rpms or under load from the valves.
now I can hardly hear the engine, but I can hear the exhaust. its not really louder, but sounds smoooother and and the exhaust sounds lower and richer in tone. just need to get past that burning smell you get at first with new cats.

Yes, it was a lot of money. its pouring out today and I was just fed up with the truck and said fuq it... its only money.

I just want to remind you that the next time you complain about your truck being a money pit, its your fault for letting yourself get ripped off on labor charges.

Haha you love keeping them in business, lol $60 bucks an hour ain't nothing to some. Looking at your tab so far I could have turned a wrench or two and had a meaner running truck.
