Default werid clunking in 4wd?

ok well i played in some mud tonight...everything was fine until i went through this puddle that went up to the headlights...right after that i noticed a clunking noise from the right front of the truck..but only in 4 wheel drive..the 4wd system still worked..and everything seemed tight underneath the truck..and i also noticed my 4wd light never came on....can this be related to the clunking?? thanks

It could be your U-joint, the 2nd gens are famous for eating them fairly often... Or if your 4WD light never came on is it possible that the 4WD shift lever wasnt fully engaged? I know sometimes mine doesnt go in completely and I have to make sure I yank the lever back until it stops solid.

i checked all the u-joints..everything is tight..is there a way to check the u-joints on the front driveshaft? i replaced the u-joints on the rear driveshaft about 2000 miles ago...its weird cause i only hear it in 4wd..once i put it back in 2wd it went away

The collar isn't fully engaging. That's why the light isn't coming on (it's not moving over far enough to make contact) and the clunk noise (it's slipping on the teeth).

Aubrey is right, your shift collar in the front right axleshaft isn't being moved all the way into place. check your vacuum lines going to the actuator, one could be kinked or knocked off. the front axle is vacuum actuated and the actuator can get dirty or sticky inside and it won't fully engage or disengage. mine got bad on the disengage, so whenever I took the truck out of 4x4 there would be a loud clunk after 10 sec or even up to an hour after. I got fed up with the vacuum actuator and bought a cable actuator for it. now i engage my front axle from inside the cab via cable and i have not had a single problem with it. up here in canada it was 257 bucks for the actuator. the nice part is I can now engage the transfer case into 4Lo and leave the front axle disengaged, so now I have a 2Lo. Check out some 4x4 shops where u live, tell em u want the cable shifter for ur front axle, they should have em or else get em in.
