RE: Dumb REVERSED JUMPER CABLES
This may be very unlikely, but the guages reading backwards made me think of it:
If a battery goes completely dead, it's possible to reverse the polarity by reversing the charging current. (positive becomes negative, and vice-versa) Since you said you did get it started,I'm guessing you switched the cables and charged correctly. Like I said, unlikely, but you might want to test the battery for charge/polarity. You probably fried something, but I don't know what.
Have you tried charging and testing the battery since it happenend? If so, what happens when you try to start it now? You didn't say, so I don't know exactly what your problem is now, if any.
Also, it's not a good idea to remove a battery cable to "test the alternator" on modern vehicles. Sounds like you tried that.
Sorry I'm not more help.
"Stuff happens", I've had the same thing happen butluckily no damage.

I would definitly take it in and have it looked at.
I had a similiar issue a few years back. Had a friend ask me for a jump. Got him started and I figured we were all set. After unhooking both vehicles he said it was the second time that day he had to be jumped and he was on his way to get his battery replaced. THEN he told me that when he jumped it earlier that day he did the same thing you did.
I never thought much of it until 2 days later when my battery blew under my hood. Turns out when he reversed his the first time he screwed his car up and even though we did it correct with mine it still had blown my voltage regulator and I was now overcharging my battery causing it to swell and blow...
Get it looked at before it causes more trouble...

I did the same thing with an old ford I had. when I tried to start the truck I saw smoke coming off my solenoid. It turned out to be a fried wire, but my alternator wouldn't hold a charge anymore either. I fried the alternator too. You can even get your alternator tested for free at napa. Pretty sure this is whats keeping your truck from running. Get a new alternator, and a new wiring harness for it too. The alternator's warrenty is void if you don't get a new wiring harness with it. Also check to see if your stereo still works. If it doesn't, you could have fried the fuse in that too. With my old ford I could pull out the stereo and replace the 5 watt fuse and it would still work. Newer decks will probably have an internal fuse I think. Hope this helps a little.

Well i'd like to thank all who honestly tried to help but now the deed is done . My Dodge is on the road again. Here is what i had to change and i had every componet checked before i changed it.
1. 140amp Alternator fuse
2. Alternator and regulator
3. Battery
4. PCM
This ended up costing me $500.00 of which my friend paid half of it because as i see it it was also partly my fault for trusting any one at all, and not checking everything to begin with.
