Before you "disable" it, read the codes off of it.

*IF* it is the same as mine, here is what I did. I don't know if the cars with OBD2 do this... right around 1995..1997 they changed, so I don't know if it works for your year... but you could try it

Arm yourself with a notepad and a pencil.

Get in the truck.

Turn the ignigion key on (to where the warning lights all come on, but don't start the engine).

Turn the ignition key off.

Repeat the on/off sequence four more times.

Turn the ignition key on.

Wait for the Check Engine Light to start blinking. It will blink a sequence of digits. Longer pause is pause between digits. "55" is the end of sequence.

If this does work and you do get the codes, they can be looked up in a book.

You'll need a scanner to turn the light off. I think you should check what the problem is first, though.

If the truck is running fine, try replacing the gas cap. Then, disconnect the negative battery cable for 20 minutes. This should clear the computer. If the light doesn't come back on, you've fixed your problem.

I have a code reader, and my check engine light kept coming on with the code "Minor Evaporative Emissions Leak." That meant bad gas cap. $15 later and I was good.

Go to your local NAPA, Autozone, O'Reilly Auto Parts, or whomever you have in town and they'll scan the truck for free. The Check Engine light is there for a reason. It means there's something wrong with your vehicle that must be repaired; otherwise, a chain reaction will go forth and what could have been a $60 repair bill could evolve into a $2,500 repair bill.
