4x4 winning and power loss
Hi i am having a 4x4 problem i can't seem to narrow down.
If i put it in to 4wheel hi or low and accelerate i can hear a winning and if i take my foot off the gas, it slows the truck down as if i down shifted or slowly hit the brake.
It also stays in 4x4 after shifting out of 4x4 i need to put in in neutral and shift from low to hi then to 4x2 to get it out of 4x4.
thisis a 2001 dodge 1500 4x4 with the 5.9
Hope some one can help, as it has with my frontU-joints

The sound could be a spun bearing, but hard to tell. Transfer case have enough oil?
As for the staying in 4x4, that is vacuum controlled through your CAD. Check the steel two vac lines that go from your transfer case, along the frame near your catalytic converter, up a bit on the rail, then to a rubber vac line. There are two lines, a red and black line that go from the steel to the CAD. The steel lines are cheap if they are rusty, I paid $25 or so, and just 3 bolts holding it in.
Not sure what you mean by saying

RE: 4x4 winning and power loss
Thank you for a fast response,
Yes the Transfer case have enough oil, have also drained the case and did not find steel on the magnet, Ofshavings in the fluid.
Other then splitting the case is there any way to check for spun bearing.
It is mostly the whining i am concerned with right now i have read many threads about the CAD, i just wonted to give as much info as passable.
I just replaced the right side U-joint thanks to this site. That is when i starter noticing the whining did i cause this some how.I have heard (afterreplacing the U-joint) you need to engage 4x4 before removing the axle is this right, could this be the whining??
Thank you for any help

It's possible you didn't get the axle lined up properly on the pass side. If you jack up that side you should be able to spin that tire easily but the driver side wheeland the drive shaft shouldn't spin.
Other than that how are your tires?
Are they all the same brand and size? Is the tread worn about the same on all tires?
Is the tires are mismatched or worn unevenly it can cause binding in the 4wd, noise and shifting problems.

After installing the axle after replacing the U-joint,i spun the rotor and only the one side turned,
it was varyeasy to turn but the 4x4 was not engaged.
It is funny you ask about tires i had a blow out on that tire right front.
it is one size smaller then the other side. Hopping that could be it?
