engine knock at start up
hey guys tonight i was at a buddys house and i started my truck with the remote starter inside his house when i got out to the truck and got to my drivers door it sounded like the engine was knocking. do you think its something i should be concerned with. i changed the oil maybe a month agoits got synthetic castrol 10w30 and a quart of lucas synthetic oil stabilizer. another thing i noticed when i was under it the other day was i could almost hear a knock like it was in the cat. im not sure if it was the engine just echoing through the cat or if its the cat. anyones help would be greatly greatly appreciated
What is the oil pressure read, and is the oil full? Does the sound go away after driving?
Not sure on the sound in the cat.
I get a knock in mine...has over 122,000 on it. We have ID'd it as lifter noise...goesaway once oil pressure picks up to full.

the oil pressure is up i believe its over 40lbs the oil is full and i believe it goes away once i start driving it. i was wondering also should i go back to conventional motor oil? the reason i put synthetic was because the previous owner said thats all he ran.
The best tool that I have found for helping track down a knock/tap/weird engine noise is a mechanics stethoscope. $9 at Summit Racing http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=skubut I'm sure that your local parts store would also have them around the same price.
Also, you say that it is a knocking sound that goes away once you drive it. An exhaust leak could sound similar and might go away once parts have expanded due to heat. Just trying to come up with some possible ideas here.
I'd recommend going the stethoscope route as your best option in trying to locate the source of the noise.

What engine is it? It might just be valvetrain noise. The 318 in my truck only has 35,000 miles on it, and my valvetrain is really noisy, even though oil pressure is fine. Some of these engines have noisy valvetrains, some don't.
