Drag link -> pitman arm installation
got a 98 4x4. I just installed a new steering gear everything did NOT go as planned but it did all come together. biggest problem was finding a 33mm socket which i ordered from SK tools so i got a 32 dollar tool that i will use every 10 years but if anyone in the Groton CT area need to use it.. i got the propper tool. If you ram is older and rusty do NOT use a 34 MM as some people suggest.. i also have the 3/4" drive breaker bar that can break the damned thing loose. anyway on to the question. i had to replace the pitman arm as i couldn't use a pitman arm puller to take it off; the jaws on the puller spread appart and i though for sure it would bust in my face so i took the drag ling out of the piman arm and removed the steering gear with pitman as one piece. everything fine there. now to reinstall the drag linkinto the pitman arm, well book doesn't have a specific torque setting for it. but an item that fits the description says torque to 65ft/lbs... but i can't do that eigther casue the drag link thread are spinning around with the nut i am trying to torque. so is this thing supposed to be torqued or just screwed till i can place the carter key though the drag link threads and assosiated nut and call it good?
Also, do all rams have kind of "loose" steering.about 1 inch of play eighter direction on the steering wheel? everything in the steering that is past the steering gear and attached to the wheels is in good tight condition but even after replaceing the steering gear there is still a little play left that can't be accounted for.....
