FRONT AXEL U-JOINTS
Right side is shot. I bought a set for the front end, just wondering how difficult it is to replace them on a 99 q-cab 4x4? They are original so they are pressed fittted but I do have a vise from hell that I can use to force them out. Anyone who has done this themselves, are there any tips you'd care to share?

Sometimes cash is worth dishing out, they shouldn't charge more than $75.
Nah, the axle joints come out easy, it's getting the goddamn axleshaft out that's the bitch. I'm betting it's never been apart for anything. Is it a 1/2 ton or a 3/4 ton? If it's a half it's not that bad. You'll need a 3/4" Cold Chissel and a 3-lb hand sledge to seperate the unit bearing from the knuckle. If it's a 3/4 ton, let a shop deal with it, it's not worth it.
THANKS FOR THE INPUT GUYS. I failed to mention that it is a 1/2 ton so I guess I'll start this project this weekend to take advantage of a few freak warm days were suppose to get. I have a good set of tools and AIR tools, and have worked on GMC ,FORD 3/4 ton 4x4s, plus replaced Jeep CJ joints. so I don't expect much of a problem, but its the learning curve that takes the longest. Once I do it once, its simple. I have a Hayes but those type books are rather generic.
Of course there is always the chance that some component is damaged.

RareTA ..Thanks, That is exactly what I was looking for. The HAYNES manuel is simply too vague. Time to order a REAL shop manuel ofr this truck.
I put the truck up on stands and pulled the wheels and used PB to pre-soak all the bolts down there. Looks like all the needle bearings are dust in one of the u-joint cups. Thank goodness the cups were still intact or for sure, I would have to replace the Yoke for being out of round.

Just down load this one. I did and it's got a lot of info. Be aware it's not dial up friendly! http://www.pavementsucks.com/forums/...hp?topic=49982
I am fixing to tackle that myself. I noticed some noise coming from the front. I got to looking and the u-joints were able to move a little in all directions. I also noticed my sway bar end links have some movement as well. I will tackle all this at once. Let me know how it goes.
More good info RARE TA. I like that TA. I am doing a restomod on a 71 MACH1 myself. http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/706829 but thats all O.T.
I went to bust loose the HUB bolts 1-11/16ths and ended up busting my 1/2 inch breaker bar, so I 'll stop by Sears andf get a Craftsman 3/4 incher so if it breaks, I can get a replacement. I used a 3 foor steel pipe to get extra torque on the B Bar, but to no avail. I need to look at the threads on the hub to see if they are reverse or not. In my Hayes manuel, it states that the DR side may be reverse threaded. To me that implies that some are and some are not. GO figure..
