My 97 did the same thing your talking about when i first got it, but now, as long as i come to a complete stop.I throw it into neutral, shift into 4 low and i don't have any problems. Same thing to get out of 4 low, neutral and shift out.

I agree, neutral seems to be what the truck likes best. Whenever I'm shifting in 4 hi or 4 low, I like to put it neutral just for safe measures.

4 hi, shift while going i just make sure i let off the gas obviously, 4 low stop or barely roll in neutal and bring it all the way into low before puttin back in drive, give low a lil time to engage or ul get a bad grind.

+1
Barely moving in neutral to get in and out of 4 low.
A tiny bit of grinding is normal. 4low isn't synchronized like 4 high is.

For 4hi I just shift away and it never grinds (knocking on wood!). For 4lo I shift the column into neutral then the 4wheel shifter into 4lo then column back into drive. It will sometimes grind a little.
Dodge trannies just suck.

i always put the tranny in neutral when shiftin to 4hi or low. in low, dont stop in neutral on the t case, make it one fluid motion. not puttin it in neutral when shiftin to 4hi is ok, just not in 4 low. some grinding is normal.

Going into 4lo its says in manuel and behind the sunvisor things to put in neut. and stop completely, i do this and there is no grinding. 4 high you can roll up to 30mph and put in high. i put mine in neut. while im rolling though just for safe measures. No grinding for me though works fine

I throw my auto in neutral with the brakes applied. Push her forward in one motion to 4lo many times recently and have not heard a grinding sound. Maybe mine is just broke in? lol, but I always stop to put mine from 2H to 4H, and 4LO

Don't put the transmission in neutral when shifting through the transfer case gears
Well at least you know what not to do

Always put your truck in neutral when shifting from 4hi to 4lo, if you're gonna leave the truck on make sure it's rolling about 1-2 mph. If it's at a dead stop, shut it off with the transmission in neutral, then shift it in or out of 4 low, then turn the truck back on.
