Default a good tip for rear drums

well i just did my mothers brakes on her 'mits' galant, and the rear drums would not come off, rusted to hell. so i noticed that there where 2 threaded holes that lined up with the axle hub.so i went and got some bolts that wood tread in, and by threading them in they pushed against the axle hub, and pushed the drum right off.i have never seen that before and thought it was awsome.
i always remember banging mine off and swearing alot.now, i had banged on these for about a half hour before i seen this.
i havent got to check mine for this, but i dont think it has it,so when i change my brakes soon i will be doing this mod.

so what i am going to do is:
1. drill three holes 1/4' following same diameter of lugs, spaced evanly apart making a triangle.
2. tap the holes with what ever thread you feel comfertable with,im useing 1/4x20.
3. spray a little paint into the threads to keep them from rusting.
4.when you replace drum put some anti seize on axle hub (prevenative maint)
that is it. no more banging!!

i hope this helps every body

and for the ones that need to get it off now, cuz its already stuck, well give it a shot while its still on the hub,i might have to.

I wish someone
would find a way to put the old aluminum Buick rear drums (or similar)
in place of our heavy cast iron rear drums on 2nd Gen Rams.

Gauranteed easiest way.

1. Jack up Truck and put axle on stand
2. Remove tire and replace 1 lug nut.
3. Hop in truck and start 'er up.
4. Place in drive and jab brakes, do the same in reverse.
5. remove lug nut and drum.

you could just use a screwdriver to loosen the star wheel on the drum brakes....ive never had to beat on it after doing that.

Thanks squirrel dude. I worked at Les Schwab, and we used the threaded holes, a big hammer, whatever. I'm not working there now, but I'll let them know. Also, nice tip for myself...

here's a slightly alternative method.
1. Jack up Truck and put axle on stand
2. Remove tire and LEAVE LUG NUTS OFF.
3. Hop in truck and start 'er up.
4. Place in drive and jab brakes, do the same in reverse.
5. CHASE BRAKE DRUM DOWN THE DRIVEWAY AND ACROSS STREET.

Would have done that, but the adjuster rod was totally seized up and the star wheel wouldn't move.
