Realistic gas mileage? 318 short bed?

if you went with a dual flowmaster setup, you mpg will go down because of low end loss. I had this on my truck and came up with a way to have the duals and keep the low end torque (for mpg). my mpg dropped approx 1.5 mpg until I fixed it.
Also, use the ngk o2 sensors, bosch sensors have a problem when used in the dodges...

I drive 5000 miles per month in my 318 Sport extended cab truck. I'm 51 years old and don't "hammer down" on it. I've changed to synthetic, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, K&N, O2's, and anything else I can think of to get more than an average of 14.6 mpg. Face it if you want GM gas mileage, you pay more for the truck, and pay less in gas. If you drive a Dodge, you don't pay as much for the truck, but you pay at the gas station. It's a damn crying shame that a truck that drives and looks this good can't pull itself out of it's own way, and still gets sorry mileage! Oh well, live and learn, last one for me!

I must ask why would you buy a truck to drive on the avg. of 170 miles a day? Unless of course you have to haul something.
Dayem that is more driving than I do in my tractor/trailer! per month.
My 2001 Quad short bed gets sometimes around 13 to 14 miles to the gallon.......depending on 1. who is driving ( when the wife drives of course it gets more gas milage she doesn't drive as fast as I do)
2. and how far we drive ( we use this vehicle for short trips less than 50 miles mostly, it would do better on longer trips)
Also if I had the factory tires back on it.....it would improve to. I have 33" tires now.

RE: Realistic gas mileage? 318 short bed?
Several reasons. One, I just prefer a truck. As an insurance agent in Arkansas, I'm in and out a lot and over the years I've found a truck is much easier on the back, knees, hips etc, as opposed to "lifting" this ole 6'1" body out of an overgrown go-cart. Secondly, often I am on rough, backwoods roads. You wouldn't believe how far back in the woods some folks live. I've been on some that a small car simply wouldn't go down. I also have some land of my own that I work, getting it ready for cattle and horses, so I need a truck for that, also to pull my boat, trailer with the tractor etc., I can't afford to pay for both the truck and a car, (insurance, taxes, payments, etc.). Whenever I bought this truck was just before gas took such a jump a year ago, and I was expecting at least 17mpg or so. Actually, I just checked and I slightly exagerated, it's only an average of 4,450 per mo. It just seems to me that as many of these trucks as there are out there SOMEONE would be able to come up with some solution to the low power vs. poor gas mileage issue. I had an old 1982 model Dodge, 318, 2bbl carb when 20+ years ago that consistantly got 18 mpg back then, you would think that computers, injection, tech. could at least equal that! I wouldn't mind so bad if it weren't so gutless.
