Default RAM 1500 dies on highway

Hi All !

Let me pick your brains on this....on my 96 1500 4wd 360 Ram with 106K on it.....

I'm cruising to work at 65mph when all of the sudden I lose power and pull over. After getting to the side of the highway the truck stalls and will turn over but not start. I did nail a big pothole 1/4 mile earlier, but I can't find any info on an inertia shutoff switch that may have been tripped.
Any ideas if this truck has one ?

Thanks.

Jeffyr

Hmm, I don't think it has an inertia shut off switch, but I could be wrong. Even if it did, I seriously doubt a pot hole would trip it. Have you checked for fuel or spark yet? Have you checked fuses/relays yet?

Timing chain/belt maybe?? I've had wife's car die on me twice like that. Once was a timing belt, the next time it was the fan belt that broke.

Survey says.........

FUEL PUMP.

Didn't give me an ounce of trouble.....until it wouldn't give me an ounce of fuel[8D]
At least my fuel guage will be accurate now since the tank has to be dropped to get the fuel pump out a new sending unit will finally go in.

Fuel pumps are little bastards, aren't they? I had one go out on my lumina when I was leaving work...I was accelerating from a turn and the car just died...so frustrating..especially when you're trying to get outta the way of a semi...

FUEL PUMP.
Not surprising. About 100K is the expected life for these pumps. Make sure it gets replaced with a new Dodge pump, and not the local part house's special. I've seen way too many aftermarket pumps fail in short order to trust one. The OEM unit will cost more, but it's worth not having to drop the tank and replace it again and again.

I have an odd problem with my truck, it hasn't died yet though. But what was happening was that I would hit the gas and nothing would really happen untill I nailed it, or it would delay for a bit then rev up. I also has an incredibly rough idle. Would the fuel pump cause that???

Hey man, I would go around andn look for all the connections you can find and make sure they are tight....If that don't work try kicking the tire sometimes it works.
