can over heating affect transmission.

Yeah, just a little bit. Your O/D Off light will come on and it will not shift into overdrive.

Newer models have a light on the cluster that says "TRANS TEMP" that will light up if your transmission gets too hot.

Overheating a trans is one of the worst things you can do to it. That's why I definetly recommend a trans temp gauge. I can't beleive these trucks didn't come from the factory with one. The trans temp light comes on at 275. That is already well beyond any temp I am comfortable with. The one time my trans temp light came on (back before I had a gauge to watch the temps), I had to have the trans rebuild about 2 weeks later. Luckily, I had a warrantly at the time.

seriously, they really needed one. It boggles me as to why they wouldnt put one in. Trucks ARE work vehicles after all...
