Engine Block Heater?
You can pick up one at napa. For those you have to pop out a freeze plug and put it in. You can get one that magnetically mounts to the oil pan, or there was one I saw on ebay that actually was a heater / motor deal that would actually heat all of your antifreeze by moving it throughout the engine even when not running. The one at napa only heats the block antifreeze which leaves the radiator and hoses left to be cold. I got into the block heater kick a few months back when it was real bad in my area. Truck wouldnt warm up barely at all until 10 min of driving. I ended up not worrying about it. I just let her warm up by idleing and away I went... easier on the pocket as well.
I'm in the same boat too... I'm looking for a block heater for my Mom's 1996 5.9L... Like this morning its 10*F out... It down right cold out. The problem is I a fire fighter and I must able to roll at a drop of a hat and not wait for the truck to warm up...
Yes they do have them at napa. I lived in fairbanks alaska for six years where it is normal to see -30 degree temps. Yes I said -30. People up there usually go with the engine block, tranny pan, engine oil pan, and battery tray heater pads. All of the above doesnt cost you more then 100 bucks or so and is a snap to put on yourself. If anyone is curious I can walk you through the install.
fixer pro or dtruck, do you think you can help me find one online? I would really like the heater / motor one becasue that seems like it would work better. I want it to heat up everything you know? If you see one on ebay please send me a link to it. And dtruck, I would definately like some help with the install, I will let you know if I end up getting one.
Thanks

Here is one I found just doing some random searching so you can get a close idea of cost and what it is supposed to look like. They also have them at Jegs.com. Just type in heater plug for the key word.

Using a block heater most definitely warms the entire cooling system. I have owned nothing but diesel trucks for more than 15 years and when the heater is plugged in for more than about an hour, you can actually turn the defroster on and de-ice your windshield without the truck even running. Block heaters are far more reliable than the ones spliced into a coolant hose, not to mention most every diesel out there, even if not equipped with a heater, has the circuitry already on board to accept on. I will ALWAYS encourage people to use a block heater over anything else.
