Default -40F???? why

Hey all,

I have a question about my 01 2500 5.9L ram. The overhead counsel reads -40F and does not change. It says in the owners manual that if it reads -40F see your dealer. I contacted the local dealer (small town) and they have never heard of this problem. I do live in the UP of MI, its cold, we still have a couple feet of snow, but its not that cold! Can somebody tell me whats going on with this thing and how I can fix it.

Thanks

Boss

Yeah about all I could offer is to call another dealer. Good luck with that!

I am thinking your thermister for the temperature sensor is broken or it is unplugged from the console. but if it is broken most likely it will need to be replaced. You just have to find out where they stuck the thing. But that is just my opinion.

Mine did that once and then it read OC which I thought for the longest time it was just 0 degrees celsius. Granted I was living in Fairbanks Alaska. When I checked with the dealer they said it meant Open Circuit. They said to check the plug in behind the front bumper. On mine is was a loomed wire with a clip on it. Almost looked like was going the front fog lights. It turned out my clip was bad. Check that out. Hope it helps.

may or may not work for your 01 ram but its worth a shot

The ambient temp sensor is located in the center of the grill. Check the connectors and wiring harness. If you unplug the sensor and your console reads OC (open circuit) it is most likely a bad ambient sensor.

I unplugged mine when I removed the hood. When I put the hood back on, I forgot to plug the sensor in. It read -40f until I plugged it back in. I never saw OC.
