Do you mean 15-17 mpg in town or highway?
That's what you would ideally be getting on the highway, not in town.
If you're pulling 10 mpg on the highway, I would suggest following the list that Ramman18 posted. Its a good start. If you're pulling 10 mpg in town, that's not bad at all for winter.
I am one of the lucky ones so far... no plenum repair needed yet (checked it when I installed my Fastman TB). I got 9-10 mpg during the winter in town, and I have a lead foot. Now with temps above zero and a slight increase in my tire pressure, I'm pulling into the 10-11 mpg range. Once it warms up even more (will be my first summer with the beast), I hope to pull it above that.
Speaking of this stuff, I still need to do a tune-up myself...
95% of my driving is in town or short sprints on the interstate to different places in town, so I never expected great MPGs. You have to realize that these are big, heavy, not-very-aerodynamic pickups with big V8s. Large + Lots of Weight + Not-an-airplane + powerful engine = bad MPG.
EDIT: That last statement was just concerning gas engines, not diesels BTW.

I just saw in another post you made you have 265's on your truck if you have not recallabrated your speedo for the new size tires you are not getting a accurate reading on your milleage anyway.

but you must understand that these trucks were not made for mpg, they were made when gas was cheap, and horsepower and strength were what people wanted.

RE: Better gas mileage???? What can I do????
these trucks are pretty strong, compare it to a ford or chevy of the same year, our trucks will out pull both of them, and not only will they do that they wont over heat trying to do that, unless you live down here in florida cause then everything overheats

RE: Better gas mileage???? What can I do????
I don't know about the same year but my uncle had a Chevy Suburban that was a 02 and had a 5.3L and it felt like it was a fair amount faster than my 5.9L. Another buddy has a 04 Chevy with a 6.0L and it's only .1L bigger and it's amazing how much faster. According to the dyno charts Hypertech shows over 100hp more stock.

One thing I've noticed after owning my 2000 Ram 2500 quad cab for 6 years is the mileage increase if I stay just under 65mph..about 2000 rpm. Anything over that and I can hear a sucking sound from the gas tank. But I still love my truck anyway.

RE: Better gas mileage???? What can I do????
I wasn't looking for a few of you to be smart ***' and tell me it's a truck and get use to it. NO ****!! I already knew that, I just know that the truck was getting MUCH better mileage before now. I know it's going to use more then our 6 banger car and wasn't built to get the same kind of gas mileage. I was just hoping that someway I can get it back to the mileage it use to get.
Now with it having the 265's and not the 245's to my knowledge the 265's are and option and would be the same on the speedo. This was the tire size on it when I bought it, so I just stayed with the same.
I replaced the O2 sensor just a couple of weeks ago and when I checked the mileage it was coming back at 14mph HIGHWAY. All my miles that I have stated are HIGHWAY and NOT city as all my driving is about 98% highway.
Now a couple of you mentioned "plenum repair." What is that? I may already know but having a brain fart here, so please enlighten me.
I'm a truck/semi driver so I tend to drive 5mph over the limit on a regular basis. Maybe the key is to slow down a tad bit too, but that's a hard thing to do. Maybe someday GREED won't keep the crude oil prices going up, up, and away!
And again of course I knew when I bought the truck it was going to cost me more for gas. That's common sense. I was a mechanic in the Army and managed auto oil/tire centers for many years, so I do know these things. My ONLY thing was to get back to the MPG that I got with it a year ago, and it's that simple!
